Radio audience share
Total radio listening shows no clear trend with total listening hours recovering most of the ground lost earlier in the year to be down just 0.4% over the same quarter last year. The BBC’s share of listening continues to creep upwards from 53.1% to 54.2% in an year. This clearly means some loss to commercial broadcasters but gains and losses within the commercial radio market are more important.
GCap Media’s share of radio listening has changed little since the previous quarterly survey. Total reach and listening hours are down slightly, but this reflects a slight drop in overall commercial radio listening and audience share has increased very slightly from 15.2% to 15.4%. The overall pattern is the same at Classic FM which also regained share previously lost but both reach and listening hours are slightly lower year on year.
Emap has been performing consistently well, but Scottish Radio Holdings, which it recently acquired, has has a bad quarter, making the combined group’s listening and reach significantly negative (-0.93% and -2.33%) compared to the previous quarter.
Chrysalis is followed a similar pattern to GCap with losses of audience share earlier in the year being offset by gains in this quarter. Chrysalis’ audience share is now unchanged on a year ago.
